What's Good In Niagara? Niagara rescue helps pets stay with families by covering care costs

Barely A Dog Rescue is a Niagara-based organization working to help pets get the care they need while staying with the families who love them.

The group was founded in 2025 by Vanessa DeProphetis, known online as Girl With The Dogs.

A professional groomer since 2011, she built a large following sharing her work, but says it also exposed a growing issue, pets suffering from treatable conditions.

DeProphetis  often stepped in herself, covering costs or providing free grooming, but says the need quickly outgrew what one person could manage.

That led to the creation of Barely A Dog Rescue, which now provides financial assistance for veterinary and grooming services, while also rescuing small dogs, placing them in foster homes, and preparing them for adoption.

The organization’s goal is to bridge the gap between love and affordability, ensuring pets don’t go without care due to financial hardship.
