Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day for Canadians, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to reflect on our country's history.
Niagara College offers a number of supports for Indigenous students, as well as programs for students to learn more about the residential system.
Director of Indigenous Education Leah Hogan says there's lots of people looking at how they can learn more.
Hogan says a lot of non-Indigenous Canadians have some hesitancy when it comes to learning about the residential school system, but adds that its never too late to learn.
Hogan adds that the residential school system was running until the late 90s in Canada, so there's lots of supports for students that may experience trauma from those experiences.
In addition to support services, Niagara College's Indigenous Education Centre also gives students the opportunity to meet and chat with Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers and Cultural Advisors, as well as an annual Indigenous Student Awards ceremony every March.
