The Gale Centre in Niagara Falls played host last week to over a dozen former NHL players for the 10th Annual Hotel Dieu Shaver Celebrity Cup.
The hockey tournament raises funds every for Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre. Executive Director Kristina Manzi says the money goes towards purchasing new equipment and upgrading patient areas.
The fun started Thursday evening with a draft where 14 teams of fundraisers got to pick one NHL Alumni for their team, with the selection order determined by total money raised. The on-ice tournament action then got going Friday afternoon.
Among the list of hockey celebrities were some former Toronto Maple Leafs including forwards Doug Gilmour and Rick Vaive, as well as goaltender Curtis Joseph - who got to shed his goalie gear for one day and spend time trying to score goals instead!
Some other former NHLers that participated also have local ties, including Brad May. May played for the Buffalo Sabres for several years, but spent his junior hockey days in the OHL with the Niagara Falls Thunder.
The tournament was capped off with an All-Star Game, where the top fundraiser from each team got to face off against a team of NHL legends.
