What's Good in Niagara? McHappy Day helping support families at Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Catharines' Marotta Family Hospital

For the Descamps family of Beamsville, Ronald McDonald House South Central Ontario became far more than just a place to stay, it was a lifeline during a medical crisis.

The family spent 183 nights there while their five-year-old son, Nate, received critical care for supraventricular tachycardia, a condition that causes an abnormally fast heart rhythm, leading to symptoms such as palpitations and dizziness. In his first year of life, Nate spent more time in hospital than at home.

Throughout that difficult period and the treatments that followed, Ronald McDonald House in Hamilton, along with its Family Room, served as a home away from home.

Beyond providing meals and accommodation, the House allowed the family to remain together, keeping Nate close to his older brother Miles while focusing on his recovery. During their stay, Miles celebrated three birthdays and two Christmases at Ronald McDonald House, where staff and volunteers worked to ensure each occasion felt special for the entire family.

Their experience reflects the challenges faced by families across Canada when caring for a sick or injured child, and underscores the critical role Ronald McDonald House plays in supporting them.

On Wednesday, McDonald’s Canada and its local independent franchisees will mark the return of McHappy Day, an initiative aimed at supporting families like the Descamps. Throughout the day, a portion of proceeds from all food and beverage sales will be donated to Ronald McDonald House and other local children’s charities.

In Ontario alone, Ronald McDonald House South Central Ontario has supported families from more than 130 communities in 2025. However, due to limited space and availability, Ronald McDonald House programs across the country are currently unable to assist up to four out of every five families in need.

Fundraising efforts such as McHappy Day play a crucial role in helping to bridge that gap.
