The Niagara IceDogs added a key piece to their future on the back end Friday night, selecting defenceman Max Lappan with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 2026 OHL Priority Selection presented by Real Canadian Superstore.

Held in Kingston, the annual draft gives Ontario Hockey League clubs the chance to secure some of the top under-16 talent from across Canada and the United States. Niagara used its opening selection on a player who produced strong numbers with Honeybaked 15U AAA during the 2025-26 season.

Lappan finished the year with 132 points in 89 games, combining high-end offensive production with a steady defensive game that made him one of the top blueline prospects available.

General manager Dale DeGray says Lappan checks every box.

The IceDogs’ scouting staff believes the right-shot defender has the hockey sense and versatility to handle significant minutes while contributing in all situations.

DeGray says the 6-foot-1, 225-pound, 16-year-old will not be easily pushed around on the ice.

After hearing his name called, Lappan said sharing the moment with his parents was his first priority, crediting his family and support system for helping him reach the OHL.

He added that he hopes to make an immediate impact by breaking up plays, moving the puck quickly and creating offence in transition.

Niagara expects Lappan to join the club at training camp as it continues building its prospect pool.
