The City of Welland will mark Franco-Ontarian Day with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall on Thursday, September 25, at 9 a.m.
Mayor Frank Campion says the French language is a big part of the culture in the city.
This year’s celebration coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag, a milestone being honoured in communities across Ontario.
First raised in Sudbury in 1975 and officially recognized in 2001, the flag’s green and white colours symbolize summer and winter while reflecting the resilience and heritage of the Francophone community.
Campion adds that for many people in Welland, French is their first language, which is why a number of municipal resources are available in both English and French.
Following the City Hall ceremony, local Francophone organizations will continue the festivities with a community flag raising at Club Richelieu at 10 a.m. and a day of cultural celebrations.
