It is time for the first ever edition of IceDogs Unleashed, a new weekly feature taking a look into the world of the Niagara IceDogs as they prepare for and play through the 2026-2027 OHL season.
With a new General Manager and Coach coming into this year, there’s plenty of excitement around the team as training camp gets underway.
Rookie camp has given the organization a chance to evaluate some of its youngest players, with prospects competing against their peers for a chance to advance to main camp.
IceDogs General Manager Dale DeGray says the early days of camp have already produced some pleasant surprises, including strong performances from players who may have been overlooked.
The IceDogs are expected to narrow the group significantly over the next few days, going from dozens of players to roughly 25 or 26 by Saturday. DeGray says the organization believes smaller groups allow management and coaches to get a better look at individual players and give prospects the best opportunity to show what they can do.
The team’s identity is also beginning to take shape, as DeGray says the IceDogs want to be a fast, hard-working team.
While training camp performances will factor into roster decisions, DeGray says exhibition games will be especially important as the coaching staff gets a chance to see players perform in game situations.
The IceDogs will continue through training camp and preseason action ahead of the regular-season opener on September 18. For the young players taking part, it’s an important opportunity to prove they belong at the OHL level - and for the IceDogs, it’s the first step toward building the team that will take the ice this season.
The team starts their regular season on September 18th against the Brantford Bulldogs, before their home opener on September 19th at the Meridian Centre against the Brampton Steelheads.
