Welland man charged after pedestrian injured, dog killed during hit and run

Niagara Regional Police have laid charges against a Welland man following a hit-and-run that left a pedestrian seriously injured.

Officers were called to Thorold Road, between Bridlewood and Rose, around 8:30 p.m. Saturday after reports a pedestrian had been struck.

Police say the victim, who was walking their dog at the time, was taken to an out-of-region hospital with serious injuries, while the dog died at the scene.

A 44-year-old Welland resident, Sandev Varaich, was later arrested and charged with failing to remain at the scene, along with two impaired driving-related offences.
