SIU concludes no charges for NRPS officer after tased man fractures shoulder

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has cleared a Niagara Regional Police officer after a 42-year-old man suffered a fractured shoulder during an arrest in St. Catharines.

The incident dates back to Sept. 16, when officers were called to the Metro grocery store on Lakeshore Road for a report of a disoriented man who had collapsed.

After experiencing a seizure, the man told police he wanted to go home, then swung at one officer and walked away from the ambulance.

Officers, worried he could step into traffic, deployed a taser to stop him, and he fell to the ground.

SIU Director Joseph Martino said the use of less-lethal force was justified given the urgency and safety concerns.
