A new memorial honouring firefighters who died in the line of duty is now officially open in downtown St. Catharines.
The Fallen Firefighters Memorial was unveiled earlier this week at the corner of Race and Carlisle Streets, near the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre.
It honours St. Catharines Fire Services members who died in the line of duty or from work-related illnesses, along with volunteer firefighters who served in the city's former wards and townships.
The memorial features bronze statues of firefighters, a granite wall with plaques bearing the names of fallen members, and several other landscaping and commemorative features.
