On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Brock Professor Sheila Cote-Meek, Director of Indigenous Educational Studies Programs and a member of the Temagami First Nation, reflected on the growing interest in Indigenous studies.
Over the past decade, she says there has been a noticeable shift as more students, educators, and community members seek to understand Indigenous knowledge, culture, and history.
Cote-Meek shares her perspective on how non-Indigenous Canadians can take part in reconciliation.
She encouraged people to seek out opportunities to learn about the residential school system, Indigenous histories, and diverse cultures, not only through formal education, but also by attending cultural events, reading Indigenous authors, and listening to community voices.
