Global Adoption Weekend is coming up this weekend, and in Niagara, 54 percent of pet parents have never adopted from a shelter, while research shows 51 percent of residents would like to.
According to new survey data from Mars, some of the biggest concerns for people considering adoption include a pet’s health and unknown medical history, behaviour history, training needs, and finding a pet that fits their household and lifestyle.
Chief Executive Officer of Niagara SPCA, Amelia Canto, says the health of the adoptable pets is a top priority.
To help address those concerns, Mars is launching a new online Adoption Hub with practical resources to help families understand the needs and costs of adoption, and prepare for life with a new pet before and after adoption.
The 2026 Mars Global Adoption Weekend will expand to more than 30 countries, supporting more than 60 shelters and helping more pets find homes, including at the Niagara SPCA.
