Influenze-related admissions across Niagara are decreasing, but there's still lots of winter left.
That's according to Niagara Health, which says although influenza activity has begun to decline, physicians say its impacts linger, with patients often requiring longer and more complex hospital stays that continue to limit bed availability.
Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control Dr. Karim Ali says influenza-related admissions have dropped from 85 patients before the holidays to 47, but recovery takes time and continues to affect hospital capacity.
He says if possible, stay home while sick to avoid more stress on the healthcare system.
Dr. Ali adds that Niagara is an area that gets harder than just about anywhere else in Ontario.
Niagara Health adds that ongoing efforts are underway to improve patient flow and safe discharges.
