As Mental Health Week continues, today we're focusing on the importance of mental health support for children as their brains continue to develop in school.
Mental Health Lead with the District School Board of Niagara Amanda Sherman says often times, there is a direct correlation between a student's learning and their mental health.
As of this week, there are 28,000 Ontario children and youth on a wait list for mental health services, with some waiting as long as two and a half years to find it outside of a school setting.
Isaac Virag, a Social Worker at DSBN, says the conversation around mental health in classrooms is one that's a lot more prominent now than in years past.
Mental health is something that was included in the physical education curriculum in 2019, with more recent modules being released since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
DSBN also offers a number of services for students seeking mental health help, whether it be in elementary or high school.
