The head of the company in charge of Ontario's recycling system hopes people across the province embrace changes which see many more items allowed in your blue box now. That includes coffee cups, toothpaste tubes, plastic bags, styrofoam and even wrapping paper.
CEO of Circular Materials, Alan Langdon says alcoholic beverage containers should still not be placed in the blue bin.
Langdon says all the new items were being accepted as of January 1st and what's accepted, is now uniform across the province.
That now includes things like chip, milk and bread bags, candy wrappers, cling wrap and bubble wrap. Langdon hopes residents keep rinsing items as well.
Langdon says it really helps when cardboard boxes are flattened and bundled together for recycling.
The shift will reportedly save municipalities more than $200 million by holding producers fully responsible for the cost and operation of recycling programs, not municipalities.
