There’s a new voice behind the bench in Niagara.
Jake Grimes officially began his first day as the Niagara IceDogs’ new head coach yesterday, bringing plenty of coaching experience with him to the Meridian Centre.
Grimes’ coaching career began earlier than expected after injuries cut short his playing days. Since then, he’s worked in the QMJHL with the Cape Breton Eagles, as well as in the OHL with Saginaw, Peterborough, Guelph and Belleville.
For Grimes, his first day in Niagara has already left a strong impression. He says there's a lot to be excited about.
He’s also familiar with the passion of Niagara’s fan base, having experienced the IceDogs as an opposing coach. Grimes describes the crowd as excited and noisy, and says Niagara has always been a difficult place for visiting teams to play.
As for what fans can expect from his teams, Grimes says accountability will be at the centre of his coaching philosophy.
And with a young IceDogs roster and a new coaching staff, Grimes sees an opportunity for everyone to grow together.
He says the coaches aren’t there simply to be the players’ bosses — they’re there to work alongside them, with everyone rowing in the same direction.
