Prolonged Heat Warning continues through Thursday

A prolonged stretch of extreme heat and humidity continues across the region, with daytime highs reaching between 29 and 32 degrees Celsius and humidex values peaking between 35 and 40.

The oppressive heat is expected to last through Thursday, with overnight lows remaining in the 19 to 23 degree range, offering little overnight relief.

Officials are urging residents to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups like older adults, young children, and people with pre-existing health conditions. Signs of heat exhaustion include nausea, headache, dark urine and intense fatigue. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention — symptoms may include confusion, hot red skin, or loss of consciousness.

To stay safe, drink plenty of water, wear loose-fitting light-coloured clothing, and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat. If your home is too hot, visit a cooling centre, library, or shaded public space.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local public health advisories and check on neighbours and loved ones frequently.

This period of extreme weather is expected to break with a shift in the pattern late Thursday night.
