Poilievre releases video response to election results, NDP name interim leader

Poilievre slated to run in Alberta byelection

Newly elected and returning Conservative MPs gathered in Ottawa this morning as the party begins to chart its course forward following last week’s federal election loss to the Liberals.

The meeting comes without Leader Pierre Poilievre, who lost his longtime seat in Carleton after two decades as MP.

Despite the loss, Poilievre struck a hopeful tone in a video posted Monday, expressing gratitude for the party’s broader coalition of voters and pledging to learn from the experience.

Alberta MP-elect Damien Kurek has offered to resign his seat in Battle River–Crowfoot to allow Poilievre a chance to re-enter the House through a byelection.

From one leader to another, B.C. MP Don Davies will be the interim leader for the New Democratic Party of Canada.

He was chosen by the party's national council last night following the resignation of Jagmeet Singh, who lost his seat in Burnaby Central in the election last week.

Davies led the NDP negotiations with the Liberal government to advance dental care and pharmacare legislation and has served as the party's health and finance critic.

The rules and timing for a leadership contest will reportedly be determined at a later date.
