Niagara Regional Police are reminding residents to be cautious as a “Grandparent Scam” continues to target vulnerable community members.
The scam typically involves a phone call to an elderly victim, with the caller pretending to be a grandchild or relative in urgent legal trouble, such as a car crash or criminal charges.
Victims are then pressured to provide large amounts of money.
Fraudsters may also involve a second person posing as a lawyer, police officer, or court official to make the story seem more believable.
Payment is often requested through cash pickups, courier services, or electronic transfers, with victims told not to share the situation with anyone.
Police urge anyone who believes they have been contacted by these scammers to reach out to the NRPS.
