Niagara Regional Police are warning residents about a new fraud scam circulating in other areas that could affect the region.
Scammers are calling people, claiming to be from the local Crown Attorney’s Office or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and instructing victims to make payments using “government-approved ATMs”, which are actually unregulated Bitcoin machines.
NRPS stresses that neither the Crown Attorney’s Office nor the Anti-Fraud Centre will ever ask for payments.
Residents are urged to verify any suspicious calls independently and contact NRPS if they believe they’ve been targeted.
