Niagara Regional Police are investigating an assault in downtown St. Catharines that seriously injured a 25-year-old Welland man.

Officers were called to the area of St. Paul and Bond Streets around 8:50 Saturday night, where they found the victim suffering from serious injuries.

Police say a verbal interaction between the victim and an accused turned into a physical altercation. 41-year-old Samantha Jacobs of St. Catharines was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm.

As of Tuesday evening, police have arrested a second man in connection with the incident.

36-year-old William Rider of St. Catharines is charged with aggravated assault and remains in custody ahead of a bail hearing Wednesday.

Police are investigating whether the incident may have been hate-motivated, and anyone with information is asked to contact Niagara Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
