Charges laid in relations to defamatory posters

Posters found in Thorold, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls

Niagara Regional Police have laid charges following an investigation into defamatory posters found in multiple Niagara communities.

Police say the posters, which appeared on hydro poles and in public spaces across Thorold, St. Catharines, and Niagara Falls, displayed an individual’s photo and personal contact details—along with defamatory and false claims.

Following an investigation, police identified a suspect and executed a search warrant at a St. Catharines home on May 9.

As a result, 29-year-old Joseph Michael Roy of St. Catharines was arrested. He is facing several charges, including publishing libel known to be false, disobeying a lawful court order, and multiple firearms-related offences.

Roy was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
